In the end it's revealed that the ancient aliens that created humans left a message directly for Desmond under the Vatican, explaining how some cataclysm involving the sun killed almost all of them off and that humans soon faced the problem again. So it looks like not only does Desmond have to save the world from the Templars, but also literally save the whole world itself.
I'll have to wait till next boxing day when Brother-Hood is on sale to find out what happens next...
In the meanwhile it's on to Fallout: New Vegas, where the rad-roaches are not the only giant bugs to be found...
