Disgaea: Hour of Darkness - Day 1

When I started up Disgaea I quickly ran into a problem, the screen was squished up to the top half of my LCD TV and there was a big distortion along the lower half. It turns out that when NIS made the game they used a video memory saving technique of rendering in 240P instead of 480I and expecting the screen the stretch the video automatically, unfortunately when it's sent through a RGB cable like mine was it gets all confused and doesn't display right. So I had to get out my old PS2 S-Video cable to play it (the other NIS games shouldn't have this problem).

Since I haven't played this game for about the same amount of time Laharl has been sleeping I decided to start from the beginning and go through the tutorial levels.

The story starts with Etna trying to wake up Laharl (son of the demon king) from a 2 year nap to inform him his father is dead and the kingdom has gone nuts with usurpers. So to shake off the cobwebs (and remind me of how to play this game) I start into the tutorial game, where I'm re-introduced to the Prinnies and just how silly this game is. :)

After several rounds of killing monsters to the sounds of “Dood!” I fished the tutorial (Protip: Don't throw like monsters into each other, they make 1 stronger monster >_<) and was ready to move on to Mid-Boss', I mean Vyers', castle to loot everything that wasn't nailed down or on fire.

But before heading out I was able to create some minions with the 4 manna points Laharl had accumulated. Being the Avatard that I am I made a female cleric called Katara, a male warrior named Sokka, a male green (air) mage called Aang, and a male red (fire) mage called Zuko. When I have the manna and a cool enough class availably I'll add Toph and others. ^_^ I got to the 3rd level of Vyers' castle before losing half my forces and I figured it was a good time to head back home to heal, save, and call it a night.

Next week it's Mid-Boss and beyond!
