Well after starting over from m last save point I grinded till I leveled up and put the points into health this time instead of abilities, which seems to make the difference. In the end Mario and Vivian finally stomped the ghost, got the red star crystal, and joined up with the rest of the party again.
Peach meanwhile was called again by the computer, who was conflicted by wanting Peach to be happy and it's mission to help take over the world. It then gave peach a little quiz in order to leak to her the whole plan of the bad guys (to use the demon sealed in the 1000 year door to take over the world) and then let her contact Mario.
Bowser tried to fly to the sky city again in his clown copter, but it malfunctioned and stuck him in a parody of the underwater Super Mario Bros. levels.
Back with Mario, he finds out that the next star crystal is on a haunted island and makes a deal with a pirate to gain passage there. which is where I'll be going tomorrow...
