I was planning to go up the volcano to get the ingredient i was messing for a quest anyways, so may as well save the whole town from an ashy tomb while i'm at it.
Onward and upwards!
First thing I found while exploring the volcano was another one of those broken robots. I'm kinda getting the feeling that later on I'll get a spell to activate them for some reason.
I'll see you again shortly!
The enemies in this area are, unsurprisingly, mostly fire and gas based. After a couple of fight, I got the answer to where do I get more orbs to evolve my familiars, they are given out randomly after battles. Luckily enough, I snagged 2 on my first shot, and since they need to match the element of the familiar, it's extra lucky that they are for 2 of my higher up ones.
Sweet!
Also, during the same battle I caught a weird balloon monster. I'm not sure if the odds of getting the orbs and catching a monster is connected or I just really lucked out. Either way, I now have six familiars, which fills out the three slots for Oliver and Esther.
I named it Frenzy
Well, they look a little less silly now...
This turns out to be a big mistake, since it leaves both of them with just 1 strong familiar each. A couple battles later and things go sideways quickly. During a fight Esthe's main familiar dies, and her weak ones soon follow, leaving just Oliver against 2 fire monsters, he gets over whelmed and it's game over before i know it.
Damnit, take your blood money!
Not wanting to lose a half hour of work and all those upgrades, I pay the fee to restart. Things go well, and I catch a couple more familiars, but there's still the problem with only 1 strong fighter each. In a bone head move I accidentally send out level 4 Sulky into a fight and Oliver is wiped out fast, I switch over to Esthe, but she's not built to tank a fight, so she dies quick. I don't want to spend another 500+ gold to revive again, so i go back to the save i made at the star of the volcano, losing all that progress.
This puts me in a bad frame of mind and I start to get reckless, trying to blast through enemies to level up and catch more familiars. Obvious result happens, I die, a lot. Eventually I calm down and take things slow, doubling back to the save point and healing often, keeping a close eye on HP/MP, and picking my targets better. This works out really well, and soon I'm back where I was progress and level wise, but I haven't caught a single familiar the whole time playing it safe!
Also, I didn't get any more of those orbs needed to evolve familiars, giving weight to my theory that it's based on catching familiars. It wasn't until i was 2/3 up the volcano that I was about to catch a silly little fire ghost, and no orbs.
Also called it Frenzy, since the last one didn't count.
I continue up the Volcano, but stopped by a strong rumbling. Drippy announces that there's only 3 minuets left before the whole things blow, so it's time to hall ass!
Most people run away from a volcano, not up it!
It's a mad dash up the volcano, navigating twisting paths, fighting enemies in the way (luckily the fights don't count on the timer), dodging steam vents, all while keeping an eye out for hidden treasure chests. I finally make it to the top with just 12 seconds left to spare.
Then Drippy stops the timer and says that should be enough rushing. turns out that there was no actual danger in 3 minuets, he just wanted us to move faster.
Rule number one: Fairies lie!
But either way, we're at the top now, and can see the massive boulder that used to plug the top, now balancing precariously on the edge.
On top of Old Smoky, All covered with soot, I lost all my progress, When my team went kaput
There isn't much time to suss out a plan, since the big bad dark wizard shows up, along with his nappy red hair.
Phrasing.
He doesn't stick around though, he's just there long enough to summon a giant lava rhino man, and then poofs away.
He thinks he's all hot.
This fight likely was meant to be harder than it turned out to be, but I just used the same tacit as the last boss. Circling around at a distance throwing ice while Esthe keeps him distracted. It's working great, then half way into the fight Drippy suggests getting in close and attacking his fiery tail to do more damage.
Yeah, no, I think my way is working out ok.
It takes several cups of coffee (which refils MP), but I finally whittled him down to no health. Staggered, he falls back into the lava, then Oliver sends a magic blast to the base of the rock plug. It falls down right on the moster, hopefully killing it, and plugging the hole again. Yay!
Oh yeah, he dead.
The town is saved and I even got a page talking about the monster I just squished.
He's about as thick as this paper now.
It's time to head back to town, and along the way I manage to catch another one of those fire ghosts. I named it Scraps since it's a spare I plan to use to test things out on.
The disposable familiar!
In town, the sage says that there is no more that he can teach Oliver and that he must seek out the other 2 remaining sages. Trouble is, that he doesn't really know where they are, they're just "somewhere".
Drippy always has a way with words.
The only hint is that maybe one's in a town across the ocean, so it's off to the nearest port. But first, more side quests!
I was finally able to turn in the on from yesterday, giving a merchant the ingredients for Tikka Mahala. At least we get a whole mess of the stuff and a bunch of money for the trouble.
Not to be confused with Tikka Masala
After that was a smile fetch quest for that travelling man in the grey suit. Lastly was a quest from some guy who wanted to see captured specimens of the local monster with a turban and the one that looks like a bunch of bananas. The trouble with this is that those monsters have about a 2% catch rate! I spent over half an hour running all over the desert attacking ever one i could find. To make things more difficult, I was so high level that all the monster on the world map run away from me, and they disappear if you don't catch them fast enough. I lucked out and got the turban one after about 10 minutes. After 20 minutes more of getting nothing, I finally caught a banana monster just when i was considering giving up.
At least the reward was worth it. 500$ and 2 evolving orbs, the same ones that I used way back to evolve Sulky and Gogo!
Also got an trophy for it too!
Woah, Déjà vu.
And just because I had an extra orb left over. I evolved Rumble too, since it was the only one that could use it.
Looks just as silly, now more purple!
With all that done, all that's left is to head off to the docks tomorrow and sail on to new lands!
Hold up, what's that?
Or so I thought. Just as i was taking the final screen shot, a pirate cat enemy attacked, and I manged to catch one on the very first encounter! After all night struggling to catch anything, this one just jumped into my lap piratically!
I shall call him Squshie, and he shall be mine, and he shall be my Squshie.
