In the story missions I finally dealt with the last of john's old gang, and while I was expecting the government guys to shoot him in the back they actually kept their word and returned his son and wife.
And the story mode kept going...
Now the missions revolve around John getting use to normal life and getting his ranch in order, and the quest givers are his wife, son, and uncle. I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop...
