Well, we didn't get very far out of the frying pan before ending up back in the fire. Right after leaving the hotel by a second story balcony, Joel spots that the courtyard below is teaming with hunters. Yet is a surprising display of not being a grouchy lone wolf, he give Ellie a riffle to snipe with while he goes down and stealths them out. Eh even comas as close as his grumpy ass can get to saying thank you for saving his life.
Just don't shoot me...
While killing the dudes, I encountered once again an odd quirk of the game, it likes to save really randomly. I head off to the left first to pick off a couple stragglers, and after doing that i get found out and killed, but instead of putting me back at the start, it drops me off on the far left, dudes dead, but no alarm. It's like a weird partial reset, but no alarms, so i'm not complaining.
Now to get the right side...
I track back to the middle, then kill the one guy off to the right. This opens up a path to get into a building and up the stairs to where the Hunters have their sniper. After taking out their sniper the real fun begins.
You're mine now...
The remaining Hunters start finding that half their guys are gone, and they start flipping out. I hop through a window and hide in the office just behind the sniper's perch and wait for them. The whole concept of climbing into another room through a window must fry the hunter's AI, since as soon as one of them climbs in, they forget what they are are doing and go to patrol mode, which is easy to sneak up on. Repeat this same tactic 4 times and all the rest of them are down.
I guess you helped?
One silly little thing i found while looting was this box of "Corn Meal". I guess the artist had a deadline to meet, so they just shopped the name of a Cheerios box and called it a day. They even left the General Mills logo!
Off brand cereals even put more effort into their box art!
Next up is a little scene where the Hunters gun down a couple as they try to run away, then just leave the bodies when they find nothing worth taking. This not only point that these are the bad guys in not so subtle ways, but also establishes their hummer with mounted machine gun.
Gee, and I thought they were all warm and fuzzy till now...
So, who's next?
After that, Joel and Ellie head down a long alley way with an unobstructed view of the far side. They may as well put up signs saying 'not a trap, honest!'
Yeah... I'm taking this as slow as possible...
Wouldn't you know it, the hummer shows up! While I was able to stealth take out all the Hunters in the area, the hummer would automatically target me if i got close at all.
This is going to be tricky.
I was able to sneak past it to a point, but then the story part kicked in and the hummer started tracking everywhere I went! The game became a mad dash, dodging from one bit of cover to another any time the machine gun took even a moment break.
How is this a fair fight!?
After being gunned down many times, I escaped and made my way to the second floor, out of the view of the hummer. While shimmying along the ledge, I came across an inviting open window, which i instantly figured was a trap.
That looks too convenient.
But turns out that it was a false alarm, the room was empty aside from a little bit of loot. The next window though, yeah, that was a trap.
"Hey, i'm a grumpy adult looking after a kid too. Let's be friend"
Joel is jumped by some dude and they proceed to beat each other up until Ellie calls it off. Turns out the guy's name is Henry and he's looking after his little brother Sam. He's also looking for the Fireflies and has a plan to get past the Hunter outpost guarding the bridge. They'll go in at night when the security is lowest and stealth their way in. Along the way to Henry's hide out, the group pass through a toy store with a couple Easter eggs.
This must be an alternate reality where Naughty Dog just made board games.
That night, they make their way to the outpost, along the way passing a model of the bridge, This out that this model is in better shale than the real thing...
What is this? An escape route for ants?!
Like most every combat section, I manage to stealth kill a bunch of the Hunters no problem, but then one sounds the alarm and it's fists and bullets everywhere! After the guard post, the hummer rolls up just as we close the door. There's a mad dash to climb up the side of a truck which leads to the bridge. Henry and Sam make it, then the ladder gives out as Ellie climbs up. With no way to save Joel, Henry says they have to leave him behind to survive. Ellie says fuck that noise and jumps down to stick with Joel.
They just barely make it past the hummer, then have to kill a restaurant full of Hunters, ending with a final run to the bridge with the hummer in hot pursuit. Unfortunately, the bridge seen better days and a big chunk of the floor is missing. With the hummer moments away from getting them, Ellie decided to take her chances diving into the water, even not being able to swim. Joel dives right after, keeping her afloat, but then getting knocked out by a rock in the fast moving water.
They are fished out of the water quite a ways down stream by Henry. Joel is pissed about being left behind, but Henry explains that it was the only way to save any of them, and it all worked out in the end, if he stayed all four of them would be dead. So now it's off to track down a radio tower rumoured to be a Firefly base. I'm sure that this won't end in disappointment and death...
Nice view at least.
Oh, and along the way I found 3 more of the comics that Ellie collects, though technically now Joel has a bigger collection than her.
Pick an art style and stick with it!
